Purpose of the Job

  • To work with Project Managers in the Programmes team to manage project delivery across the Nigeria Programmes portfolio

Context and Environment
The British Council in Nigeria works in three strategic business areas; Arts, English, Education and Society.

This post will also support programmes team activity across the three
business areas taking place in Abuja and the north of Nigeria. This
includes (but is not limited to):

  • The MacArthur funded Teacher Education Research project
  • Education exhibitions
  • Organising Events that take place in Abuja
  • Supporting inward visitor programmes
  • The Researcher Links programme
  • The Customer Relationship Management (CRM) project
  • Stakeholder Engagement Projects

Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Main Duties

Project Management and Coordination:

  • Support the delivery of project activity to agreed timelines, costs and performance indicators.
  • Support Project Managers and Directors maintain and update Project and Programme Plans and Briefs
  • Responsible for updating contact records in CRM for contacts of the Programmes Management Group
  • Be responsible for project records management and archiving in
    line with corporate policy on data protection and information management
  • Be responsible for maintaining project activity and Gantt charts
  • Support organisation and management of inward and outward visit
    schedules for internal colleagues including from the Region and UK
    including booking hotels and travel
  • Support Directors and Project Managers in organising and managing events.
  • Organise meetings with internal and external contacts on behalf of Project Managers and Directors

Financial management:

  • Responsible for creating and managing programme purchase orders
    and ensuring appropriate management of invoicing and payment of
    suppliers and vendors.
  • Support project managers source quotations from suppliers in compliance with the corporate procurement policy

Key Relationships:

  • Project Managers in Education and Skills, Society and Arts; the
    external consultant on the Gender Research Project; Programmes
    Management Group; Partnerships Manager, Evaluation Manager, Nigeria
    Communications team, Abuja Facilities team.

Other important features or requirements of the job

  • Operational project work requires occasional work outside
    conditioned hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends. Time off
    in lieu (TOIL) should be agreed with the line manager in advance to
    maintain an adequate work-life balance.
  • The post-holder may also be required to travel to various
    project activity locations and internationally on BC business and should
    therefore hold valid travel documents.
  • Training may be required for certain aspects of the job such as using SAP.

  • Communication skills: Listens to others and expresses self
    clearly, with grammatical accuracy and awareness of a diverse audience
    in speaking and writing.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the education and social landscape in Nigeria
