Objectives

The Bank’s Ten Year Strategy (TYS) 2013-2022 as refined by the Five Priority Areas (the Hi-5s delivery foci) aim to position the Bank ‘at the center of Africa’s transformation’ and also transform the Bank into a Knowledge Broker and Learning Hub for Africa. To enhance staff engagement the Bank has a People’s Strategy which guides the facilitation of Employee Engagement Index between the Management and Staff.

The People Strategy has 4 pillars: i) Leadership; ii) Staff Engagement and Communications; iii) Performance and Accountability and iv) Workforce of Future. The People Strategy will ensure that the Bank maintains the work environment and cadre of top quality staff that has the necessary skills, focus training and commitment to deliver on the Bank’s ambitious agenda for Africa as presented in its Long Term Strategy (LTS).

As staff are at the heart of the work carried out by the Bank, it aims to provide a coherent framework and an agenda that responds to the many people challenges that need to be addressed on an ongoing basis to allow the Bank to realise its people vision and its commitment to being the Employer of Choice in Africa. It aspires to create a gender-responsive and people friendly work environment which in turn will help it retain its highly productive workforce, and enable it to effectively discharge the development mandate, the enhancement of existing and introduction of new family friendly programs is imperative.

In this context, the Human Resources Employee Relations and Welfare Division ( CHRM4) of the Corporate Human Resources Department (CHRM) aims to engage an individual Employee Relations and Occupational Health and Safety consultant that will support the CHRM.4 Division Manager in the delivery of the staff welfare program.

The consultant will work closely with the Division Manager and CHRM.4 team members, the Bank’s Medical Centre, the Business Continuity team, the Bank’s Family Association, the Staff Council and external providers to ensure that there is seamless collaboration and interaction among the key stakeholders and staff.

The role requires strategic and strong skills in occupational health and safety issues, conflict resolution establishing family friendly programs, communication and teamwork. The consultant shall have the ability to deliver to expected defined quality, set time scales; and should operate a feed-back loop to enable him/her to track and report on activities undertaken and impacts achieved.

Duties and responsibilities

Occupational Health and Safety OHS:

  • Co-ordination of Bank’s OHS activities, initiatives and programs
  • Ensure floor marshals are appointed and trained for all floors of the HA building and the field offices (FO)
  • Ensure equipment is purchased, placed and maintained appropriate
  • Regular missions to the FO to ensure the rollout of the program as approved by senior management
  • Participation in health inspection of Bank’s cafeteria in collaboration with the Medical Centre and the Health unit

Family Association:

  • Liaise with lawyers that have been contracted to assist Bank in registering the Family Association as non-profit organization as per their TORs
  • Co-ordinate the elections of the Family association bureau
  • Assist the family association in the execution of their mandate and be the Bank representative in the bureau

Family Friendly Programs:

  • A range of Family Friendly programs have been recently approved by senior management, the consultant will have to initiate the necessary follow up action with the different internal units to fine tune the proposal as requested by the management
  • Thorough follow up will be needed for the implementation of the programs based on a specific timetable
  • The incumbent will be expected to be very proactive in the way to implement and also propose innovative ideas to

Ad hoc:

  • Drafting of emails, letters and attending to other request from CHRM4 manager.

Additional Requirements
Ability to:

  • Work on your own, with little or no supervision,
  • Use own initiative and
  • Work with cross functional teams

Selection Criteria
Including desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Master’s degree or the equivalent in Employee Relations and Labour Law
  • 5 years’ experience in Employee Relations
  • Strong report writing, communication and presentation skills. Able to deliver succinct messages, enroll & garner commitment from management and staff across the Bank in both formal and informal settings.
  • Experience in developing communications and marketing materials, managing events, and using a variety of outreach strategies and tactics.
  • Demonstrable track record of designing and implementing strategies; delivering results through in-house staff welfare programs.
  • Extensive experience in the design and implementation of sequenced enterprise wide Occupational Health and Safety Programs.
  • Practical experience managing conflicts
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in client relationship management and stakeholder outreach
  • Ability to toggle between strategy development & tactical execution measuring impact of staff welfare issues on the Bank’s business.
  • Tolerance of ambiguity; able to chart a way forward even when the path is not very clear.
  • Results orientated, resourceful with in-depth ability to overcome challenges.
  • Excellent relationship-building and team working skills.
  • Knowledge of the Bank’s basic IT skills
