Role Responsibilities

  • To originate innovative formats for BBC Igbo social media posts best suited for each social network, including Facebook and Instagram and optimize these formats using social analytics and then champion the use of successful formats across the team.
  • Re-version BBC material with a mobile audience in mind.

The Ideal Candidate

  • A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Igbo
  • Experience of video production, editing and storytelling.
  • Experience of using video editing software similar to Q-edit or FCPX.
  • In depth understanding of digital and social platforms – the BBC’s and others – and the different ways audiences are consuming news in Africa
  • A strong journalistic track record with knowledge of Africa and African affairs.
  • Experience in social-first content production and audience engagement.
  • Wide and up to date familiarity with the area/s to which the Service broadcasts including Africa , Nigeria and West African affairs and an in-depth understanding of the area/s history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will have a successful record of working in an online production environment with demonstrable experience and enthusiasm for social media and interactivity, an excellent knowledge of developments in social media and related areas.
  • You’ll have an eye for a good story, the ability to tell digital stories in Yoruba and English and have video editing skills. It would advantageous if your language skills extended to Igbo, Hausa or Pidgin.
  • You must have strong editorial judgment and a solid understanding of journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • You will have the ability to create new form/short form content from the development of an idea through to editing and publishing and have experience producing content specifically for social platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

About the Team

  • BBC Africa Innovation Hub is a production and development team responsible for creating high impact visual journalism. We’re building an agile, dynamic team to be at the forefront of crafting innovating ways of telling stories digitally for the African mobile audience.
  • The team works with the newly formed television genres programmes, newsgathering, investigations team and language digital services to create data- driven stories, visual storytelling and pilot content that address the data challenges audiences are facing.
  • This team has the remit to explore new innovative use of technologies, with an emphasis on social, mobile and youth audiences.
  • The BBC Africa Innovation Hub aims to generate digital content that meets the BBC high editorial standards and showcase the continent’s best visual journalism.

About the Role

  • You’ll be leading a team of visual journalists (developers, designers, journalists, visual artists, interactive journalists and women’s affairs journalists based in Lagos).

Job Purpose

  • To create bespoke optimized content including social media posts, reports, compilations, interviews, discussions, ‘explainers’, features video, photos, infographics and other editorial content for social media networks and on all BBC Pidgin platforms.
  • To ensure that any output material for which the post holder is responsible meets the standards required by the BBC

Main Duties

  • Work with other members of the Pidgin and Nigeria team, and the wider BBC Africa newsroom, to identify and produce creative and innovative video news content.
  • To originate innovative formats for BBC Pidgin social media posts best suited for each social network, including Facebook and Instagram and optimize these formats using social analytics and then champion the use of successful formats across the team.
  • Re-version BBC material with a mobile audience in mind.

Job Purpose

  • The BBC’s Africa Hub is looking for a creative journalist aware of the emerging and unreported stories about African women. This candidate will have a background creating content that represents and targets African women. As a creative you’re already creating compelling shareable digital content either professionally or in a personal capacity.
  • This candidate must be literate in social media and experienced in content creation for social media, especially Facebook and Instagram.
  • The candidate will play an integral role in brainstorming, creating and executing women’s content. We’re looking for someone who genuinely believes there are many stories about African women to be told who will source, curate and commission content on women’s issues from across Africa.
  • Working with editors, digital TV editors and senior social media journalists from the region and wider BBC the Women Affairs Journalist would be expected to identify, sub and distribute compelling content back to the Africa services and where appropriate to BBC News Online. Role Responsibility
