  • In this context, UN Women Nigeria Country Office is looking for a creative and dynamic intern to work directly under the supervision of the Country Representative and Deputy Country Representative (as appropriate), in support of implementing the HeForShe Strategy, including launching of the Campaign at state levels, managing Gender Champions and celebrity relations, as well as  the development of innovative fundraising strategies. Intern must have a “can-do” attitude and be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

The UN Women Nigeria Country Office prioritizes women’s economic empowerment as one of its core programmatic areas of focus. UN women’s efforts to enhance women’s economic empowerment in the recent past has include support to women entrepreneurs in ICT, facilitating women’s financial inclusion through partnership with Mastercard, and supporting women IDPs in conflict-affected areas in the North-East of Nigeria to re-engage in agricultural activities.
  • UN Women has initiated a dynamic women’s economic empowerment programme, addressed to two key areas of intervention: empowerment of women in the agricultural sector and promoting access by women-owned businesses to affirmative procurement opportunities. Both initiatives are in furtherance of the Government of Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan and will be implemented in partnership with other UN agencies, women’s agricultural cooperatives and business networks.
  • Within an aim to support the implementation and expansion of UN Women’s work in this sector the Nigeria Country Office is  seeking to engage an innovative, outstanding and committed intern, working under the supervision of the Programme Manager-Women’s Economic Empowerment. The intern will assist in interventions related to promoting gender-sensitive procurement and women entrepreneurs’ access to public procurement; as well as implementation of the flagship programme on Women’s Economic Empowerment through agribusiness, in collaboration with other UN Partners.

The Spotlight Initiative will be implemented in six target states in Nigeria by five principal agencies (UNDP, UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF and UNESCO) under the coordination of the Resident Coordinator’s Office.

  • Assist in the day to day planning and management of programmes and activities

Job Title: Women’s Peace and Security/Humanitarian Intern

Background

  • Nigeria’s central role in ECOWAS, its large population and strong economy is a strategic player in West Africa and in sub-Saharan Africa more generally. However, Nigeria faces several security challenges including low-intensity conflicts over resource wealth, crimes and kidnappings and in recent years, the onset of the conflict in the North-East of Nigeria between Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) and the Government. This conflict began in 2009, and has claimed over twenty thousand lives, displaced over two million people and destroyed thousands of properties. Women have been the first victims of the displacement and human rights abuses triggered by the conflict.
  • In addition to the North-East conflict, Nigeria is confronted with pockets of conflict and insecurity in other regions of the country, which threaten to undermine peace in the country and which require a stronger engagement of women to support mediation and conflict prevention efforts. These include the long-standing conflicts over oil resource and wealth distribution in the Niger Delta; separatist agitation by segments of the Igbo population in the country’s South-East; and conflicts between pastoralists and farmers, which stretch from the North-East, North-West, South West and South East of the country, and which is estimated to have resulted in more deaths than the North-East conflict.
  • Moreover, women’s role in the different conflicts has been overlooked and their capacity under-utilized, leaving untapped an incredible tool for transformative change and sustainable peace, as women are often seen only as victims of conflicts that need to be protected rather than agents of change for peace.

UN Women’s Work
UN Women has just completed implementation of a four-year programme, “Promoting Women’s Engagement in Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria (2014-2018)”. The Programme supported the Nigerian Government at Federal level and three Northern States (Adamawa, Plateau and Gombe), to strengthen women’s leadership, advance gender equality and improve protection for women and children in conflict settings. The Programme facilitated the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325).

UN Women works in the North-East, and has a field office in Maiduguri, Borno State (the epicenter of the Northeast conflict). It supports efforts on a gender inclusive and responsive humanitarian response, through mainstreaming gender in strategic frameworks and programmes and training humanitarian actors on Gender in humanitarian action (GiHA). UN Women also provides skills training and livelihoods support to conflict affected women and girls to boost their economic empowerment status.  The office further strengthens women’s participation in humanitarian response, recovery and peacebuilding efforts and has implemented projects in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and Yobe States.

Within the context of UN Women’s support to women’s peace and security and humanitarian response, the office is looking for an innovative, outstanding and committed intern, working under the supervision of the Programme Managers on Women’s Peace and Security (WPS) and Humanitarian Action (HA). The intern will support the roll-out of WPS and Humanitarian projects currently supported by UN Women, with a focus on ensuring women’s engagement and participation in peacebuilding, economic empowerment/recovery and minimizing gender inequalities.

  • UN Women Nigeria seeks to engage a young, dynamic graduate to serve as an intern within its Communications team. The internship will initially be issued for a period of three months and, subject to good performance, may be extended for a further three months. The purpose of the internship is to give students the opportunity to have a first-hand experience for them to build their capacity as part of their studies and to also contribute to the work of UN Women.
  • Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Communications Associate, the Communications intern will have the opportunity to learn how to provide communications support that ensures high quality, accuracy and consistency of work. S/He will also have an opportunity to work in close collaboration with the Country Office staff to learn, exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Communications Associate, the intern will, the following tasks:
  • Provide support to collect information, write and disseminate content (UN Women social media, newsletters, etc)
  • Assist in the production of communication materials that showcase the added value and thought leadership of UN Women Nigeria
  • Assist the communications team: in the organization of key outreach events like International Women’s Day, and other project events and opportunities
  • Support in dissemination of information and publications;
  • Participate in meetings and perform other communications/advocacy support tasks as required.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:

  • The intern should be pursuing academic studies in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Development Studies or other similar subject at post graduate level.
  • Be enrolled in a post graduate school programme (second university degree, or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English is required.

Experience:

  • No work experience is required
  • Some knowledge and experience in events coverage, organizing events and/or training, media relations and/or advocacy campaigns, using traditional and social media will be an asset
  • Some experience in graphic design (Adobe suite) and creating communication materials will be an added advantage
  • Strong computer skills, Word, Excel, Power Point.
