Job for Hausa Translation Consultant at Breakthrough Action-Nigeria

Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria is a new five-year, USAID-funded project. The goal of Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria is to increase the practice of 17 priority individual and household level behaviors and five provider targeted behaviors in the areas of malaria; maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition; family planning and reproductive health (RH); and tuberculosis, while increasing the capacity of national and sub-national entities to coordinate and oversee quality SBC programming. Implementation will vary by health area across eleven states.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Hausa Translation Consultant

Location: Abuja

Background and context

  • Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria is developing an interpersonal communications (IPC) tool that will be used by community volunteers to deliver health messages during household visits in Bauchi, Kebbi, and Sokoto. A discussion guide, or Dialogue Framework, for this IPC tool has been developed with inputs from the project’s technical advisors to ensure technical accuracy and completeness of the information and alignment with the Federal Ministry of Health guidelines. The discussion guide has also gone through an external review workshop with representatives from FMOH, NMEP, State level PHCDAs (Bauchi, Kebbi and Sokoto) as well as IHP and GHSC-PSM.
  • The project requires the Dialogue Frameworks be translated into simple and standard Hausa so that they can be used by Hausa-speaking Community Volunteers.

Specific Tasks:

  • The Hausa Translation Consultant will lead the translation of a 48-page (approximately 14,400 words) English document into simple and standard Hausa.

Approach to Work:

  • The consultant will receive the English documents and work independently to complete the translation on time. The document is divided into 4 sections, and the consultant will submit each section as and when completed for review and feedback.

Deliverables:

  • The final document in simple and standard Hausa should be in Microsoft Word, and mirror the format of the English document.

Qualifications and Specialized Knowledge

  • 3-5 years of experience translating English into Hausa
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word
  • Access to a laptop to accomplish the scope of work
  • Availability during the consultancy period.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in simple and standard Hausa
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Additional Information
Period of consultancy:

  • Consultancy is expected to be awarded by March 1, and the completed transcripts should be submitted by March 15, 2019.

  • The Hausa Translation Consultant will report to Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria’s SBC and Innovations Advisor.
