We are seeking ethical, resourceful, experienced and enterprising professionals to fill the role below:

Job Title: Copy Editor

Details
This job requires candidates to be able to perform duties that include the following:

  • Impeccable grammar skills, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for ensuring accuracy and clarity.
  • Arrange page layouts of photos, articles, and advertisements
  • Rewrite text to improve clarity and readability
  • Rework submitted stories to draw out stronger angles
  • Ability to background stories with facts, figures and history as relevant
  • Eagle eye for spotting likely plagiarism and drawing Editor’s attention to it promptly
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to adhere to style guidelines and a desire to work in a fast-paced news environment are essential.
  • Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
  • Verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics
  • Check text for style, readability, and adherence to editorial policies

Desirable:

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision
  • Resourcefulness: approach news editing from more pragmatic angles
  • Analytical skills – Use clear, logical steps and excellent judgment to understand possible news items from all angles
  • Ability to post stories online
  • Computer skills and familiarity with office proprietary software such as Microsoft Word, etc.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

  • Between five (5) and 15 years of active on-the-job experience
  • Minimum of first degree in the English Language, Mass Communication or any of the Arts/social science courses
  • English proficiency is a must
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision
  • Resourcefulness: approach news editing from more pragmatic and dramatic angles
  • Analytical skills – Use clear, logical steps and excellent judgment to understand stories and edit as appropriate
  • Computer skills and familiarity with office proprietary software such as Microsoft Word, etc.

Remuneration
Very attractive but negotiable.
