Job Title: Assistant Editor

Location: Lagos

Role Overview

  • Businessday is looking for an Assistant Editor to work closely with the senior editors to frame the daily news agenda for print and digital, and ensure its execution.
  • This role will also be responsible for supervising a team of multimedia analysts as well as editing high value copy and overseeing accuracy and quality of published content as well as plan, assign and supervise specific desk activities.
  • The ideal candidate will be a skilled manager and editor with knowledge of economics and business, macro and micro, large and small; a vision for creative, high-impact coverage on all platforms; and an ability to inspire colleagues to do ambitous, audacious work. The role will require the ability to engage directly with analysts, discuss ideas for stories, edit their content and collaborate with other editors on editorial content.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of analysts to push Businessday’s digital-first strategy and use all digital platforms to build stronger relationships with the readers.
  • Monitor local, national and global business news to ensure Businessday is ahead of the conversation
  • Manage staff, providing continual feedback to employees on their performance, to develop talent and push the department to do better
  • Deliver quality and extensive analysis and reporting in digital and print
  • Assign, produce and edit the kind of business journalism that readers would click on and subscribe to; ensure that reporting is fair, accurate, high quality and meets the ethical standards and style of the publication
  • Work with editorial management to set a strategic course for the department that prioritizes digital development, grows audience and digital subscriptions, and fulfils current company goals
  • Apply creativity to story generation, presentation, and medium to reach audiences and grow new ones
  • Ensure that the department meets digital and print production deadlines and maintains ideal story flow
  • Collaborate with digital technology team on evolving forms of journalism and the platforms that deliver it.
  • Perform critical reviews of stories, graphics, videos, etc. These reviews include assessing the quality and tone of what we publish, as well as ensuring that our content is properly produced with links, photos, videos or other relevant digital assets.

Successful applicants in this role would typically have:

  • Economic, finance, or other relevant academic or professional background
  • Excellent written and spoken command of English
  • Excellent people’s skills and good emotional intelligence
  • Interest in producing content across a range of sectors with different lenses or themes
  • Curiosity and passion for storytelling
  • At least five to seven years’ experience in journalism
  • Interest in business and economics
  • A fair understanding of macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts, basic regulation, and familiarity with a range of public policy issues
  • Desire to learn and develop knowledge
  • A creative mindset to identify interesting and in-depth stories
  • Good research skills
