Job Description / Requirements

  • Are you passionate about increasing the representation of diversity in genomics? Come join the Genomics and Data Science group at 54Gene. Our mission is to deliver on the promise of precision medicine for African populations and to use genomic insights to benefit populations across the globe.
  • We are looking for enthusiastic and engaged undergrad, masters or PhD students to fill several internship positions, commencing June 2021. The positions will be 8 week paid internships and will provide successful applicants with valuable experience with some of the key tools and concepts around the processing, analysis and interpretation of genomic sequence and genotyping array data.
  • We are seeking candidates with strong analytical skills, some programming experience (e.g. C++/Python), and experience with at least one statistical software package (e.g. R). Familiarity with *nix environments, basic bioinformatics techniques, and concepts in data science is preferred. Familiarity with GWAS and statistical genetics would also be preferred.

Potential Projects Include:

  • Population genetics of genetic groups in Nigeria, including machine learning based approaches to classification of ancestry and quantification of admixture
  • Genome-wide and phenome-wide association studies
  • Rare variant annotation and interpretation
  • Implementation and application of best-practices pipelines for alignment and genotyping of whole-genome sequence data
  • Design of cloud-based pipelines to QC and process genotyping array data
  • Imputation of genotyping arrays into an African whole-genome sequence reference.

Job Title: Infectious Disease Medical Laboratory Scientist

Job Description

Candidates must be willing to join a fast-paced environment, be willing to learn quickly, adapt to new environments and must have a keen interest in research related activities.   • The Infectious Disease Medical Laboratory scientist will be responsible for processing all samples received for infectious disease analysis in the lab.

Duties and Responsibilities
Daily Routine:

  • Ensure that collected and registered specimens correspond with the given lab numbers before processing.
  • Always follow strictly to sample rejection and acceptance criteria.
  • Isolate and identify microorganisms from specimens using sophisticated equipment as required.
  • Quantify microbial load on specimens as applicable.
  • Perform suitable rapid diagnostic tests.
  • Ensure prompt test turnaround time based on SOPs; from receipt of samples to authorization and validation by the Pathologist.
  • Perform both culture dependent and independent molecular analysis of microbial isolates as required.
  • Ensure quality control is performed based on equipment SOPs and that maintenance logs are up to date.
  • Ensure daily temperature charts are up to date (refrigerator and room temperature).
  • Required to adhere to all quality and safety guidelines as stated in the laboratory manual
  • Required to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Weekly / Monthly Tasks:

  • Preparation of reagents, media & stains as required.
  • General supervision and cleaning of laboratory equipment including, but not limited to fridges and centrifuges.
  • Ensure that services are provided in an accurate, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
  • Maintaining data security and strict privacy with patient laboratory records.
  • Assist in reviews and revising of infectious disease SOPS and Policies.

Qualification and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science (Minimum 2nd class honours upper division); Core strengths in Microbiology.
  • 2 years postgraduate experience in Clinical Microbiology
  • Must have a valid license to practice in Nigeria.
  • Masters in any of the laboratory sciences is an added advantage.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Proficient in usage of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Experience in an Infectious disease laboratory is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, Genotyping and Sequencing techniques is desirable but not essential.

  • The Clinical Microbiologist will support operations in the Microbiology department of laboratory Operations at 54gene.

Essential Functions
Management:

  • Managing the work of the department and responding to requests for information and advice from within the laboratory and externally.
  • Ensure Clinical Microbiology Lab in 54gene is compliant with a consistent set of company approved laboratory policies and procedures, proper financial and operational controls, quality assurance measures, and safety programs and requirements.
  • Manage, in conjunction with the finance officer and VP laboratory operations, the contracts and resources of the department within the budget.
  • Develop and oversee long-range planning and budgeting plans including; personnel and equipment needs; monitoring and managing the laboratory budget, and monitoring the annual capital forecast.
  • Be responsible for identifying future developments, which may affect the work of the laboratory and develop plans accordingly.
  • Participate in relevant professional activities and provide professional expertise and advice to outside bodies.
  • Ensure that all staff undergo regular performance development reviews to identify individual training needs, set and monitor objectives in line with the needs of the individual and objectives of the laboratory.
  • Ensure that the laboratory’s quality management system is maintained and developed.
  • Ensure that appropriate risk management procedures and documents are in place.
  • Maintenance of laboratory quality.
  • Continue to further education by participating in forums, conferences and industry specific organizations.
  • Handle materials in accordance with the standards for infection prevention and control.

  • Graduate from a recognized medical school with MBBS or MBBCh or its international equivalent.
  • Must be registered as a specialist with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
  • Wide experience in all aspects of clinical microbiology
  • Experience in research and global health delivery is a plus.
  • 2 years post-fellowship experience in clinical microbiology
  • Must have a valid license to practice in Nigeria

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Essential: Bachelor’s degree in Medicine or Medical Laboratory Science (MBBS or MLS)
  • Desirable: A professional quality certification
