Job Title: Counselling Psychologist

Location: Yola, Adamawa
Department: Student Affairs

Summary of Position

  • The Counseling Psychologist, Student Affairs is charged with the responsibility of advocating and helping students achieve personal, social, and emotional success.
  • The duties shall include but not limited to individual counseling, group therapy, behavioral disorders, substance abuse disorders, youth, and crisis counseling in accordance with established policies and procedures of the American University of Nigeria.
  • University-age students face many new challenges, and the Counseling Psychologist is a vital support person for students as they navigate young adulthood.
  • Some of these challenges include anxiety, which can relate to life and career decisions or relationship challenges with family, new friends, roommates, new romantic relationships, or understanding expectations of their professors.
  • University students can also lapse into depression over grades or other stress-related to university life, and this can lead to self-harm behaviors, drug or alcohol abuse, or trauma reactions.
  • Some students develop eating disorders or feel marginalized or bullied. As a development university, we provide the support necessary to help our students develop the skills necessary to manage all of these new challenges, and the counseling psychologist is on the frontline as a safety net and reassurance that we provide a safe environment for all students to succeed.

Detailed Listing of Responsibilities

  • Assist students in identifying problems – emotional, mental, and behavioral – in their lives.
  • Work with students to diagnose any existing potential disorders through observation, interviews, and tests.
  • Provide individual planning sessions to students in the areas of planning and success, and social/emotional development, stress management, and other anxieties in accordance with the planned objectives of the University.
  • Interpret tests, student data and other assessment result appropriately in the counseling environment.
  • Provide individual counseling in response to student requests and student emergencies
  • Provide diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
  • Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all students.
  • Plan, implement, maintain and evaluate the systems necessary for the support, maintenance, and improvement of the University counseling program.
  • Maintain a comprehensive record-keeping system in concert with the medical record-keeping system employed at the University Health Center.
  • Provide referrals to the University Health Center for cases warranting more serious intervention, for consultation with a psychiatrist or hospital care.
  • Being on call for emergency situations and working directly with the University Health Center to maintain an open channel of communication.
  • Articulate the University counseling program to students, and members of the University community through designated marketing strategies, such as mental health day programs, awareness campaigns, workshops open to all students for stress management and other topics, outreach programs, etc. – a full calendar of events throughout the academic year.
  • Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development activities.
  • Promote an understanding and appreciation of diverse populations and cultures.
  • Participate in strategic decision-making and activities, which contribute to the effective operation of the Student Affairs division and the University as a whole.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students.
  • Communicate with students, faculty, and staff, as to the role of the University counseling program in the overall educational process of the University.

Requirements for the position

  • A Master’s Degree in Psychology from a recognized University plus five years experience garnered as a Counselling Psychologist. Preference will be given to individuals with a strong clinical background.
  • Experience of working in an academic environment is highly beneficial.
  • Should possess strong organizational, planning, and student-relation skills.
  • Should possess strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Should be proficient in the use of Information and Communications Technology tools and e-resources.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems with students and staff alike.
  • Ability to develop a work schedule, set goals, create and implement action plans and monitor progress towards goals.

Job Title: Basketball Coach (Male & Female)

Location: Yola, Adamawa
Department: Athletics
Reports to: Athletics Director

Summary of Description

  • The Basketball Coach will be responsible for planning, coaching, and recruiting for Basketball activities.
  • S/he will also manage and direct the Basketball program.
  • S/he will recruit basketball players, decide player positions, guide player’s performance, and instruct players on proper technique.
  • The coach will be in charge of setting tryouts, selecting a team, and setting play and practice schedules. The coach will also serve as a mentor to players and help foster teamwork.
  • S/he will coach both female and male students.

Detailed Listing of Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining high academic standards for all student-athletes.
  • Work cooperatively with other athletic coaches in order to operate a well-balanced athletic program.
  • Foster among the participants and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to win, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self.
  • Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the AUN basketball team.
  • Act as a positive influence upon the behaviour of members of his/her athletic staff and teams.
  • Be present and personally direct the team at all AUN contests and be present at as many contests as possible.
  • Responsible for the supervision of his/her athletes at invitational meets or post-season competitions.
  • Recommend the type and amount of equipment and supplies needed to conduct the sports program.
  • Provide for the inventory and care of equipment.
  • Advise the supervisor on the condition of athletic facilities and needs for their preparation and maintenance.
  • Ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained.
  • Removal of athletes from the team(s) when training or eligibility regulations have not been met.
  • Ensure that all athletes have undergone and passed medical examinations before the regular practice season begins or competitions.
  • Organize a system for encouraging students to try out for his/her team and to develop and recruit equipment manager(s), scorekeepers, statisticians, ball runners, etc. for all teams.
  • Collect and keep on file records, statistics, news items, and photographs for the athletic teams under his/her supervision.
  • Observe sub varsity practices and games.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements for the Position

  • At least ND or B.Sc preferred with two year(s) working experience as a basketball coach in a reputable Institution.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as but not limited to, bending, standing, climbing or walking.
  • Must be able to work safely in an environment.
  • Routinely required to work under different weather conditions.
  • Effective English – verbal and written communication.
  • Strong knowledge of basketball skills and procedures.
  • Ability to work as a team player.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

Job Title: Webmaster

Location: Adamawa

Summary of Position

  • The Webmaster is responsible for the management of AUN’s web-based information. S/he coordinates the inputting of regular content into AUN’s websites gathered from a range of sources both within and outside the AUN community, implements the design of and manage the day-to-day maintenance of AUN’s websites and entire web presence, monitors web activities, and incorporate new technologies and enhancements into AUN websites and assists with general multimedia-related and communications-related tasks as may be periodically required.

Detailed Listing of Responsibilities

  • Create new web pages and update existing web pages as necessary.
  • Collaborate with departments and units in AUN (through the DWOs) to constantly update and renew web content, setting up systems/procedures to encourage timeliness, quality, and accuracy of web page information.
  • Make sure that the AUN site works correctly and all links are active. Archive old web pages and ensure consistency in the level of content and look and feel across the website. Maintain an image database for use on the website.
  • Oversee the training and technical support of Departmental Web Officers.
  • Maintain custody of all hardware and software necessary for managing and operating the website.
  • Develop and implement AUN’s web systems and infrastructure and serve as a point of contact for website development projects.
  • Develop AUN’s website infrastructure, utilize applications to ensure good technical performance, and assess new technologies for applicability to AUN’s website.
  • Use available technology to promote the AUN website and gather web-based statistical information for analysis.
  • Monitor the usage and traffic of the AUN website and provide regular reports on performance and traffic to the Head of University relations and the President.
  • Assist in the formulation and enforcement of website policies and standards that, among other things, establish procedures to ensure the readiness, quality, and accuracy of the website content, and assist in educating members of the AUN community about policies and standards.
  • Assess University Relations office practices and design and produce electronic forms and data management systems as well as enhanced mail merge and emailing systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Produce electronic newsletters and mailings, as well as manage AUNs mailing lists.
  • Assist in the production of attractive and appealing electronic and printed documents, presentations, and reports.
  • Manage all AUN web advertising and be responsible for the creation and deployment of banner and text link ads.
  • Oversee AUN’s social networking initiatives in (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr, and YouTube.
  • Undertake other communications tasks as required by the Head of University Relations.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a recognized tertiary institution in a relevant field, with three (3) years of experience.
  • Excellent written language skills (non-negotiable)
  • Advanced knowledge of university-supported applications.
  • Must be competent in the use of PHP, HTML, XHTML, CSS, PHPMyAdmin, JavaScript, Joomla! Content Management System, Web authoring tools (e.g. Dreamweaver, FrontPage) and have basic knowledge in the use of multimedia and graphic animation software.
  • Ability to learn and support new technologies.
  • Multitasking, competent at, or comfortable at least, with multimedia editing suites and software
  • Working continuously on a task until completion (or referral to third parties, if appropriate)
  • Certifications in MCSE, CCNA, and others are preferable.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications with ease.
