WATSAN Technician at Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) – Holland

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international, private, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization. Our organization offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation and have been working in Nigeria since February 1996. A Memorandum of Understanding between Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Federal Government of Nigeria facilitates this. We are at present co-operating with the Federal Ministry of Health, State and Local Government departments of health on various health projects.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: WATSAN Technician – Benue Project

Location: Makurdi, Benue
Duty Station: MSF OCA, Benue Project
Job Type: Indefinite

Main Objective and Responsibility of the Position

  • Supporting the Watsan Supervisor in the implementation, monitoring, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of Water, Hygiene and Sanitation activities and infrastructure in the project according to protocols, standards and procedures in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population.

Description of the Responsibilities / Activities

  • Carrying out tasks directly related to the Watsan activities such as construction and maintenance of infrastructures in the project according to MSF protocols and standards concerning the operation of water supply, waste management and excreta disposal, hygiene and infection control.
  • Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of the Watsan structures and when applicable, of the medical facilities;
  • Identifying, recruiting, training and supervising daily labourers or hygiene agents for Watsan activities.
  • Informing the Watsan Supervisor of any difficulties, anomalies and problems that may affect the normal functioning of activities and tasks in his/her area of responsibility;
  • Assisting the Watsan Supervisor in Watsan data collection and reporting, as well as maintaining updated files and records of assigned project activities
  • Being responsible for equipment, tools, and consumables, verifying that they are safely used and maintained. Reporting to the supervisor any need of renewal and the weekly/monthly consumption.

MSF Section / Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Ensure daily safe/treated water supply and distribution in all MSF supported locations.
  • Ensure daily ground water monitoring and accurate/timely data entry of results.
  • Together with the WatSan Supervisor and HPs, ensure effective IPC measures in all MSF supported facilities.
  • Ensure Safe Water Optimization Tool (SWOT) data collection as directed by supervisor per MSF protocol.
  • Assist WatSan Supervisor in monitoring and supervision of WatSan construction activities.
  • Together with WatSan Supervisor and HPs, monitor the vector control in the camp, including proper use of mosquito net by beneficiaries etc.
  • Together with WatSan Supervisor, ensure timely IRS in all MSF facilities.
  • Support WatSan Supervisor in supervising the daily activities of Hygiene Agents in Clinics to ensure all task is appropriately done and completed.
  • Ensure proper waste management of the waste generated in clinics and other MSF facilities (warehouse, expat house and office)
  • Ensure submission of WatSan HIS data collected on weekly and monthly to the WatSan Supervisor in order for timely entering in HIS.
  • Carry out WatSan technical activities that may be required in other IDP camps and MSF supported health facilities.
  • Carry out any other task assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements (Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge)

Education:

  • Technical Certification or proven background, desirable specialization in water and sanitation

Experience:

  • Essential Previous experience in technical works (WATSAN)Desirable experience in MSF or other NGOs in developing countries.

Languages:

  • English language essential. Local language desirable. Tive is essential, Idoma is desireable.

Knowledge:

  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel, powerpoint).
