An international non-governmental organization (NGO) is recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Program Officer

Location: Abuja (may include periodic travel to other states in Nigeria)
Reports directly to: the Resident Program Director (RPD)

Job Description

  • The Program Officer will support and guide program implementation of project activities in Nigeria.
  • The Program Officer will work to ensure that all program activities are implemented efficiently, timely and in line with the values of the organization.
  • S/he will work as part of the organization’s program team and assist in developing program strategy, drafting program activity proposals and reports, supporting the monitoring and evaluation efforts, and overseeing activity budgets.
  • The Program Officer performs these functions according to direction provided by the Resident Program Director (RPD).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordination and implementation of the Institute’s program activities (trainings, meetings, workshops, conferences, seminars) and other events according to grant requirements and project workplans;
  • Conceptualize, research, and design new program interventions consistent with the Institute’s program objectives and available budgets;
  • Research, write and edit time-sensitive program documents and budgets, political updates, blogs and
  • publications, activity reports, funding proposals, and training materials:
  • Provide efficient and timely action on administrative and financial matters, written assignments and submission of reports
  • Cultivate relationships and communicate with political parties, civil society organizations, relevant government officials, local partners, and members of the diplomatic and donor community on behalf of his/her supervisor, and represent the Institute at public functions as requested;
  • Work with other program personnel to monitor and evaluate the performance of the Institute and partner organizations program activities, identifying successes and failures and recommending program adjustments accordingly;
  • Assist with all aspects of team projects and objectives, and lead the development of work products in collaboration with other staff;
  • Mobilize program participants, the media and stakeholders for events and program
  • Update and maintain program files and program participants’ contacts for monitoring and evaluation and activities internal reporting
  • Monitor Nigerian political current events and developments to provide political and programmatic analysis and recommendations;
  • Travel independently and/or as part of a team, to various locations throughout Nigeria to support the Institute’s programmatic objectives;
  • Other duties assigned by immediate supervisor and/or on behalf of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or better in Political Science, International Relations or related field;
  • At least 5 years of experience in international development; experience in dernocratic governance and politics, preferably working directly with political parties, legislative bodies, civil society, or other political and electoral stakeholders;
  • Experience working on international donor-funded democracy, governance and elections programs;
  • Experience in project cycle management, coordinating project activities, project accounting, and monitoring and evaluation;
  • Working knowledge of the politics, socioeconomics, history, power dynamics and culture of Nigeria;
  • Experience writing reports and project proposals;
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize workdiow to tight timeframes, handle multiple tasks, and be flexible with changing priorities,
  • Experience promoting meaningful participation of all citizens in the political systems, including women, youth, and other traditionally marginalized groups.

Successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • An organized approached and ability to plan workdoad
  • Excellent writing skills, including an ability to communicate complex ideas and policies;
  • Experience of event organization Detailed oriented and organized,
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines: Strong communicator and presenter in English, both verbally and in writing, and
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to coordinate and lead the efforts of other professionals to effectively meet program goals.
