We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Dairy Technical Officer

Location: Birnin Kudu Local Government, Jagawa
Employment Type: Contract

Job Description

  • Responsible for the Identification of dairy cows that require health care services.
  • Responsible for the Identification of animals that can pose a threat to the health and general wellbeing of lactating cows in the herd for treatment.
  • Adhere strictly to the daily routine visitation schedule.
  • Identify treated cows with the electronic tagging system (microchipping/RFID) upon the agreement of the farmers and at the point of treatment or any non-clinical service delivery.
  • Record and update on the online data portal ,monitoring and evaluation platforms, details of the farmer and its livestock such as:
    • The farmer’s contact details
    • The farmers’ identification number
    • The farm location
    • The number of cows
    • The breed of the cows
    • The sex of the cows
    • The colour of the cows
    • The chip number
    • Any other information
  • Ensure Farmers sign off on the service form designed by Livestock247 for each cow treated and/or microchipped
  • Maintain record of vaccination and treatment of respective cows
  • Keep track of the record of vaccination and treatment as references for subsequent services.
  • Keep track of the record of the number of cows serviced per farmer and identify when a farmer has reached the service limit
  • Collect and collate daily and weekly activity report, data, of all activities the point of service and upload regularly on theonline data portal
  • Escalate and report to your line Manager advanced and complicated cases that will require referral to the Community Veterinary clinic
  • Sensitize the farmers on adverse effect of indiscriminate use of antibiotics, endemic prevalent livestock diseases, and measures to combat same.
  • Administer antibiotics sensitive to the pathogens prevalent in the communities
  • Keep records and track utilization of drugs and other consumables
  • Recommend Process improvement
  • Any other duties assigned such as but not limited to;
    • Collation of the data of Non-inclusive Farmers within the ProjectCommunity with the average numbers of their animals (small and large ruminants)
    • Details of major livestock market with their pricing within the location of the farmers.

Requirements for the Role

  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine or Livestock Health Management.
  • 1 – 3 years work experience.
  • Possession of valid practicing license.
  • Proven experience, skills and knowledge and preferred experience on dairy management, animal health, and livestock extension services especially in African settings.
  • Have strong program management skills and high level of analytical skills in planning and project implementation
  • Be flexible, respond professionally, and establish priorities in often fluid, changing, and challenging situations with minimal guidance provided.
  • Be able to work calmly, tactfully, and effectively under pressure and to demonstrate extreme flexibility in managing more than one activity.
  • Possess willingness and enthusiasm for working with rural and vulnerable communities living in remote areas of the country.
  • In addition to being proficient in English, the Veterinarian must have basic understanding of the local languages used in the target communities such as Hausa or Fulfulde.
