Job Title: Operations Manager

Job Overview

  • The Operations manager will be responsible for the operational and team management of vessel operations and the yard.
  • The job holder will handle all high-level planning and execution of container traffic across the operational value chain of the business whilst ensuring optimal spatial management to meet marine/vessel operational needs.
  • The overall function of the role is to ensure that containers are discharged or loaded on vessels accurately and documented adequately in line with the operations plan and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Attends the daily operations meeting to align on the status of work for the day.
  • Receives the discharge and loading plan from the planning section and prepares the vessel layout plan.
  • Allocates yard ranges for imports and exports per vessel.
  • Structures and establishes goals and procedures, sets priorities, and efficiently directs daily tasks of teams with considerations to safety, efficiency, lean methodology, cost controls, and efficient utilisation of equipment and labour.
  • Receives and resolves any issues via electronic and verbal communication from both internal and external customers.
  • Completes required documentation associated with operation in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Shares report with the vessel owners as regards the status of the discharge and loading of vessel at regular intervals.
  • Provides directives on the positioning of mobile cranes before vessel arrival according to the vessel layout.
  • Ensures that all operations at the yard, gate or vessel are executed in accordance with priorities set by the planning team and escalate where changes may be required.
  • Communicates vessel operations sequence and stevedoring requirements to subordinates.
  • Ensures the optimum utilization of all equipment employed during designated shift period by monitoring equipment work queues and allocating equipment and personnel where required to achieve maximum productivity.
  • Shares report with the vessel owners as regards the status of the discharge and loading of vessel at regular intervals.
  • Oversees the control room.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant regulatory laws and organisational policies.
  • Ensures team members attend weekly safety toolbox meetings.
  • Ensures team members adhere to safety rules and operations best practices.
  • Ensures Vessels Operations team members are equipped with personal protective equipment.
  • Puts systems in place to monitor and evaluate the work of direct reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by line manager.

Minimum Educational Qualifications / Certifications / Years of Experience

  • Minimum of B.Sc Degree in Engineering, or any related field.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification is required – green belt.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the logistics, production, or manufacturing industry.
  • Excellent knowledge of shipping operations
  • Excellent knowledge of unionized environment.
  • Candidate must be conversant with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations for the on-board segregation of hazardous cargoes and storage within the terminal area.
