Training Officer – First Aid (TOFA) at International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO)

International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) – Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is a British charity that supports the safety of aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Training Officer – First Aid (TOFA)

Location: Abuja
Job Type: Full Time

Overall Purpose of Role

  • The Training Officer – First Aid will be responsible for the contextualisation and delivery of first aid training for national and international NGOs.
  • The TOFA will also support the development, organisation, delivery, and evaluation of other training courses proposed by INSO.
  • They will contribute to the Training Needs Assessment and the adaptation of courses to the context, facilitate training sessions, monitor and evaluate their effectiveness, and provide structured feedback to improve future training.

Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the Training Needs Assessment:

  •  Contribute to developing data collection tools (e.g., questionnaires, call and interview protocols), and ensure the collection.
  • Gather information on training needs through regular informal contact with Partners.
  • Contribute to analysing training needs, particularly leveraging the Partners’ knowledge, and understanding of the context.

Contribute to Course adaptation:
Adapt first aid courses to the context, in collaboration with the Training Manager:

  • Contextualize the fictional contexts/ role plays, exercises, case studies of courses to the medical and health threats in accordance with the Training SDS.
  • Revise learning activities to fit the context.
  • Integrate lessons learnt into course packages.

Support the TM in the adaptation of other courses to the context:

  • Advise on the adaptation of courses’ fictional contexts/ role plays, exercises, and case studies to the threats and context in accordance with the Training SDS.
  • Suggest revision of learning activities to fit with the context.

Develop continuous self-awareness and knowledge of the context:

  • Attend roundtables, read reports and other services.
  • Actively listen to Partners during the course to ensure adequacy between courses and their reality.
  • Translate key terminology from English or French to the local langue to ensure maximum accessibility of course content.
  • Prepare paper-based training materials, course plans, presentations, and printed flip charts.

Organise training sessions:

  • Support the Training Manager in the preparation of the Annual Plan.
  • Contribute to the registration follow-up.
  • Communicate with Partners key information regarding the training clearly and professionally.
  • Select participants fairly and transparently.
  • Ensure that the catering providers are on time and the training venue is ready, including by supporting the procurement process.

Facilitate and co-facilitate training sessions:

  • Welcome participants in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Lead the facilitation of sessions assigned in the Annual Plan in diverse country locations.
  • Ensure the quality and conformity of the training with INSO standards.
  • Ensure that the learning objectives are achieved.
  • Support other facilitators when not directly delivering a session.
  • Identify and raise security concerns immediately to TM and SafeSec PoC.
  • Contribute to support all Training Team members (other TOs, TA).
  • Represent INSO values and mandate by recommending, not instructing.
  • Create a safe environment where participants feel comfortable learning and sharing their experiences and point-of-view.

Contribute to the Monitoring & Evaluation of training sessions and continuous improvement of the acitvities:

  • Ensure pre/post-tests are completed for relevant trainings.
  • Ensure evaluation forms are completed for all trainings.
  • Complete/Draft session reports.
  • Update M&E databases after each training.
  • Contribute to other reporting.
  • Responsible for implementing Services Delivery Standards compliance items as requested by TM.
  • Actively observe other facilitators (including TM) and provide structured feedback.

Others medical responsibilities:

  • Deliver first aid care to participants when required.

Person Specification
Essential
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Medical qualification certifying a minimum of 3 years of medical education (such as medical doctor, paramedic, nurse, etc.) or have a minimum of 3 years of experience delivering first aid courses and hold an advanced first aid certification.
  • Minimum of year of relevant work experience in emergency care.
  • Advanced level in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint principally).
  • Well-developed networking and organisational skills.

Demonstrated understanding of the following:

  • Security measures for first responders and the proper activation of emergency medical services.
  • Accident management, including primary and secondary identification, levels of consciousness, respiratory disorders, circulation disorders, pulse checks, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of automated external defibrillators, and the safety lateral position.
  • The composition and use of first aid kits and trauma kits.
  • Different methods of controlling bleeding and managing minor and major wounds, including injuries caused by weapons.
  • Mechanisms and types of injuries, as well as the management of sprains and strains, immobilisation and general management of open and closed fractures (simple and compound), and the management of suspected spinal injuries.
  • The management of the respiratory tract using various techniques.
  • The management of poisonings, animal bites, and stings.
  • Psychological first aid.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience:

  • Local language skills.
  • Experience in hostile environment emergency care.
  • Work experience in the humanitarian, adult learning or civilian safety and security sector.
  • Experience developing curriculum.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the proper method for establishing the order of treatment during large-scale events.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of HEAT, HEIST, and HEFAT.
